8. 7 STOCHASTIC EFFECTS – HEREDITARY The hereditary effects of radiation result from damage to the reproductive cells. This damage takes the form of alterations, known as genetic mutations, in the hereditary material of the cell. Thus the child receives two complementary sets of genes, one from each of its parents.
