Muscular endurance: Lie on your back. Put your hands behind your head with the elbows out to the side. Have someone hold your feet on the floor with your knees bent and your feet a little over a foot from your buttocks. Raise your upper body so the elbow touches the opposite knee, right elbow to left knee, then left elbow to right knee. Count each touch. Make sure your elbows return to the ground after each knee touch. See how many you can do in one minute. Table 1 gives a rough estimate of muscular endurance.

Throwing a football requires skill. Try throwing it with your hand behind the ball’s center of gravity (COG). To throw a football so that your hand pushes through the ball’s COG, place your hand perpendicular to the ball’s longest axis, at its fattest part. When you throw the ball this way, you will be pushing along the ball’s COG. Throw the ball to a friend. Notice that the ball floats like a knuckleball in baseball. How far can you throw a football when you throw it with your hand directly behind its COG?

Flexibility: Sit on the floor with your feet against a wall. Keep the feet together and the legs straight. Bend forward at the hips. Reach for the wall with closed fists. You should be able to touch the wall with your closed fists. Stand with your legs together and straight. You should be able to touch your fingers to the floor. Arm strength: Lie facedown on the floor. Place your hands on the ground under your shoulders. The elbows should stay close to the body. Keeping the legs and body straight, press off the floor until the arms are fully extended and the body is completely off the floor.
